Porcelain with the memory of paper.

Jongjin Park’s Strata of Illusion won the 2026 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize. Its chair-like form begins with layered paper and porcelain slip, then lets the kiln alter the architecture.

At first glance, Strata of Illusion might be folded cloth, a stack of coloured paper or a chair beginning to collapse. Jongjin Park’s 2025 work unsettles those readings. It is a ceramic sculpture whose surfaces preserve the traces of a construction that the kiln has transformed.

The kiln becomes part of the drawing

Paper coated with coloured porcelain slip is layered into a dense form. During firing, the paper burns away and the structure settles under heat and gravity. The result is not simply a perfect shape reproduced in a more expensive material. The movement belongs to the work. The National Gallery Singapore records porcelain, paper, stain and glaze for the piece shown in its 2026 Craft Prize exhibition.

Park received the 2026 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize for this work. Recognition gives readers a useful point of entry, but the more durable discovery is the practice behind it. J. Lohmann Gallery describes the artist’s broader method of painting porcelain slip onto everyday paper towels and building layered vessels. Familiar domestic material becomes a route into an unfamiliar ceramic language.

Follow the artist beyond one award

Study several works before reducing the artist to the award photograph. Compare a vessel with the chair-like sculpture and notice where layers remain orderly and where they buckle. The Singapore exhibition ended in June 2026, so its page is an exhibition record rather than a current invitation. For living work, investigate the gallery’s artist information and ask what can actually be seen or acquired. The value begins in material intelligence and authorship, not an assumption that a prize establishes a resale market.
