A home woven into a wall.

The pattern begins with a home. For the Frafra Tapestry project, the plan of a family compound in northern Ghana becomes the structure of a large woven surface. Rooms, walls and circulation are translated into lines that the makers know through daily life.

A plan understood from within

Designer Álvaro Catalán de Ocón developed the work with Baba Tree Basket Company and local artisans using elephant grass and established basketry knowledge. The project page identifies the compound and the process. LOEWE’s Craft Prize archive names the eight weavers associated with the recognised work.

That attribution matters. The tapestry should not be reduced to a Western designer discovering a beautiful technique. Its value mechanism lies in collaboration between spatial knowledge, material skill and design translation. The named makers and the place are part of the work’s identity.

Authorship has several names

What holds value is a chain of meaning that remains inspectable. Materials, dimensions, date, edition or unique status, participating weavers and documentation should accompany the individual piece. Variation is not a defect in handmade work, but condition and exact identity still need to be described.

The Room presents a Frafra Tapestry with an enquiry route, making this more than a museum-only example. A prospective buyer should ask how payment and attribution reach the makers, what can be commissioned, how the grass should be displayed and how repairs would be handled.
