OUR METHOD
The reasons behind the selection.
A compelling subject is the beginning. The reading has to earn its place.
Begin with the particular.
We look for an object, place, experience or idea with a clear reason to matter. Familiar names can offer an entry point; discoveries can expand the field. Neither reputation nor novelty is enough on its own.
Read the value in context.
Design, authorship, materials, usefulness, rarity, cultural significance and financial evidence are different lenses. We use the ones that fit the subject and explain the connection. We do not compress them into an unexplained score.
When ownership is part of the question, we consider the exact example, purchase terms, upkeep, condition and possible next owner. A lower loss of value can be useful without being an investment return.
Establish what can be known.
We distinguish primary records, independent research and statements from a seller or project participant. Several reports repeating one announcement are not several independent confirmations.
A full Selection requires primary and independent evidence, a documented image licence, a stated review horizon and a clear limit to its claims. Short source-led notes are labelled as such; they are not silently promoted to inspected or independently verified recommendations.
Match the claim to the evidence.
A discovery says why a subject merits attention. An ownership perspective examines what living with it involves. Market context reports evidence with its limitations. None silently means that WHV recommends the subject as an investment.
A capital-preservation or return thesis requires a defined object or reference, market, time horizon, comparable realised transactions, entry and exit costs, ownership costs, liquidity and adverse scenarios. Missing evidence cannot be repaired by a disclaimer or a prestigious name.
An editor must be able to state the strongest reasonable objection to a Selection and explain why the evidence still supports the precise claim being made. Where it does not, we narrow the claim, hold the subject or decline it.
Keep the reading open.
We look for contrary evidence and explain what could change the conclusion. A historical price, current estimate and future forecast are different kinds of information. Source dates, WHV publication dates and material updates remain distinct.
