A finished cabinet solves one arrangement. A system of parts can leave the next arrangement open. Dieter Rams designed the 606 Universal Shelving System in 1960, and Vitsœ has produced it ever since. Its proposition is not that your home will remain the same. It is that the furniture should be able to change with it.

The aluminium E-Track is the common support. Shelves, cabinets and work surfaces attach with notched pins. Vitsœ describes shelves that can also be reversed or turned vertically to become magnetic surfaces. Wall-mounted, supported and free-standing configurations offer different ways to use the components. The value is not in having the most elaborate first installation.

Imagine starting with books and later needing a place to work. The useful question is how much of the existing arrangement can remain, which parts move and which additions are genuinely needed. Vitsœ offers a planning service for initial orders and later moves, and says its planners encourage customers to begin with less. That service belongs in the assessment alongside the physical components. Adaptability needs someone to help make it work.

Adaptable does not mean effortless.

The maker’s structural guidance is a useful corrective to the effortless photographs. Suitability and loading depend on the supporting wall, floor or ceiling and the chosen configuration. Moving a system may need new fixings, extra components or professional installation. A free-standing arrangement is not interchangeable with a wall-mounted one without attention to its structure.

WHV’s reading is that retained usefulness can be a form of retained value even when no resale takes place. Before buying, ask for a plan for the room you have and discuss a plausible next use. Compare the whole cost, including installation and likely changes, with an alternative that meets those needs. A system earns its premium when its flexibility is used, not merely because the word timeless appears beside it.
