DISCOVERY / Independent Watchmaking
Two balances, one conversation.
F.P. Journe’s current Chronomètre à Résonance turns the interaction between two regulators into the reason for the watch.
Published 13 September 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
The dial presents two readings of time. Inside the current Chronomètre à Résonance, two independent gear trains and balances operate side by side. Their proximity allows the regulators to influence one another through resonance when properly adjusted.
One case, two timekeepers
F.P. Journe’s Calibre 1520 uses one mainspring barrel to supply the two trains and a remontoir d’égalité for each. The maker states 42 hours of total autonomy and recommends winding after 28 hours for stable amplitude. The crown at four o’clock can reset both seconds displays together.
The idea matters because it can be explained mechanically. Resonance is not simply a decorative name or a second time zone placed on a dial. It is a demanding relationship between regulators whose performance depends on construction, adjustment and later service.
The movement is the proposition
What holds value is the integrity of that proposition in an identified reference. The current model is offered in 40 and 42 millimetre cases. Earlier Resonance watches use different movements and layouts, so production period, reference, case metal, dial, movement number and service record must stay attached to the individual watch.
A potential owner should first decide whether the mechanism itself is compelling. Handle the size, confirm delivery and warranty through an authorised source, and ask how the movement will be serviced over decades. Secondary-market price can move independently of the quality of the idea.
