Two blue diamonds at a June sale show why size alone is an incomplete way to read a jewel.

At Christie’s New York sale on 9 June, the 31.62-carat Azure Blue achieved a reported price realised of US$8,371,000. A 5.04-carat fancy vivid blue diamond achieved US$8,127,000.
The contrast is a useful invitation to look beyond carat weight. Colour description, shape, provenance and the specifics of each stone belong in the reading. A price-per-carat shortcut cannot explain the whole object.
These are individual auction outcomes, not interchangeable comparables. Our interest is in how carefully the differences need to be understood before a market conclusion can be drawn.
