DISCOVERY / Vacuum Jugs & Serviceable Domestic Design

The jug with another morning in it.

Erik Magnussen’s Stelton EM77 makes a simple serving gesture distinctive. A replaceable glass insert gives the familiar cylinder another practical reason to stay.

A tall cylinder, a handle and a stopper that tips as you pour. The Stelton EM77 is a reminder that a familiar domestic act can contain a complete design idea. It does not need a screen or a new function to remain interesting. Its appeal lies in making serving a drink feel straightforward and visually coherent.

One small movement carries the idea

Erik Magnussen designed the jug introduced in 1977. Stelton’s current description distinguishes its tipping stopper for everyday use from a screw lid for travel. Inside the outer body sits a glass insert. Those different pieces perform different jobs, so the object can be understood as more than one inseparable shell. The red jug in the historical photograph makes the cylinder and handle especially clear.

The present spare-parts catalogue is where the enduring-use argument becomes concrete. It lists glass inserts in different capacities, stoppers, gaskets, a spout and a spring. A broken inner vessel need not automatically end the outer body’s useful life. That is a credible route to maintenance, not a guarantee that any part will fit every generation or be immediately in stock in every region.

Keep the cylinder, identify the part

Handle a jug before choosing it and check capacity, pouring and the care instructions for the actual version. The glass liner needs appropriate treatment, and the maker does not describe the jug as dishwasher safe. If repairing an older example, identify its model and size before ordering. The reward is not ownership of a famous name. It is a well-understood object able to take its place in another ordinary morning.
