A good desk lamp should disappear into the task, then move exactly where you need it. The pleasure of an Anglepoise is that its mechanism remains legible. You can see the arms and springs doing their work.

The springs are the idea

George Carwardine’s Original 1227 appeared in 1935. The current version retains the articulated, spring-balanced idea, with aluminium arms and shade above a weighted cast-iron base. Its shape is familiar because the underlying job has not gone away. A desk still needs controllable light.

The more consequential detail is support. Anglepoise describes a lifetime guarantee for eligible new lights bought from 2020, activated by registration within 90 days. Vintage lamps sit outside that guarantee, but the company offers advice, parts and an assessment of possible repairs. A route back to use is more meaningful than simply calling something timeless.

Choose the life around the object

For a new lamp, check the local terms and register it. For an old one, identify the model and have its electrical condition assessed before use. Do not pay for age when what you need is a working light. WHV’s interest is the combination of an intelligible mechanism, daily usefulness and a maker still willing to discuss the object after the sale.
