DISCOVERY / Motorcycles & Purposeful Geometry
The idea beneath the retro paint.
BMW’s R 12 G/S recalls an influential motorcycle, but its stronger case begins with wheel size, suspension and the intended journey.

Retro paint is easy to recognise. A useful riding idea takes a closer look. BMW’s R 12 G/S, introduced in 2025, returns to the visual territory of the R 80 G/S while giving the contemporary machine an explicit enduro brief. The interesting question is not whether the colours recall an older motorcycle, but what the proportions and components are intended to make possible.
Heritage should do something
The air-and-oil-cooled boxer, shaft drive, large front wheel and long-travel suspension define that brief more clearly than a badge. BMW offers different equipment configurations, so the model name alone does not tell you the complete specification. Seat height, rear wheel choice and protective equipment deserve attention before the conversation reaches optional finishes.
Its place here is as a considered vehicle rather than an investment prediction. Familiar mechanical arrangements can remain desirable when they support a distinct kind of use. They do not erase weight, maintenance or the skill involved in handling a substantial motorcycle on loose ground. A romantic association with travel is not evidence that the machine suits every journey or rider.
The right machine for the actual route
Arrange a proper fit assessment and test ride through an authorised dealer, then compare the exact configuration with your route, riding experience and service access. Check where off-road riding is lawful rather than assuming that an adventurous image grants access. The value worth investigating is a coherent machine for a particular owner, with its limitations understood before the first long trip.
