A new lens for an old language.
Leica’s first 35mm Noctilux brings an unusually wide aperture to a familiar field of view. The more interesting continuity is the system around it.

A 35mm lens can hold a person and their surroundings in the same picture. Open the aperture to f/1.2 and that familiar view acquires another possibility: a thin plane of attention within a wider scene. Leica introduced its first 35mm Noctilux in January 2026, bringing the name associated with exceptionally fast lenses to this everyday focal length.
Continuity without standing still
The Noctilux-M 35 f/1.2 ASPH. remains a manual-focus M-mount lens. Floating elements address performance across focusing distances, while the minimum focusing distance reaches half a metre. There is an important distinction here. The close range below the conventional rangefinder limit requires live-view focusing on a suitable camera. Sharing a mount does not make every function identical on every body.
Its WHV interest lies in that combination of continuity and a genuinely different optical brief. A lens system can remain useful while its individual tools evolve. This is not a claim that a new lens makes older ones obsolete, or that a prestigious name guarantees better photographs. A smaller, slower lens may be the more comfortable companion for the way someone actually works.
Start with the photograph
Try the lens on the body you intend to use. Compare weight, viewfinder obstruction, close focusing and the difficulty of placing focus accurately at a wide aperture. Ask about compatibility and service before committing. The lasting value is a tool that expands a photographer’s language within a comprehensible system, provided its particular strengths become part of real picture-making.
