The setting that disappears.

Van Cleef & Arpels’ Poissons Mystérieux clip makes coloured sapphires read like water. The important part is the skilled construction you struggle to see.

Small fish seem to swim through a sheet of blue and violet light. In Van Cleef & Arpels’ Poissons Mystérieux clip, the water is made from coloured sapphires. The 2024 Treasure Island collection uses the Vitrail Mystery Set to make the supporting structure recede, allowing the stones to read as an almost continuous surface.

The construction serves the illusion

The house describes buff-topped sapphires and a setting concealed from both front and back. This is not simply a matter of choosing expensive stones. Their cutting, colour relationships and assembly have to work together. The visual result depends on knowledge that cannot be recovered by weighing the gold or listing the gems.

There is a longer history behind that disappearing structure. The house’s archive traces invisible-setting research through several workshops and jewellers, including its collaboration with Atelier Langlois and its 1933 patent application. That account is more interesting than a solitary-genius origin story. A recognisable jewellery language emerged from specialist collaboration and continued refinement.

Look beyond the stone list

Use the collection photographs to examine where the surface changes from transparent colour to the diamond fish and outer border. For any acquisition enquiry, request the exact object record, condition assessment and guidance on care and specialist repair. This is an exceptional high-jewellery example, not an everyday recommendation. Its broader value is educational: it shows why the work holding materials together can matter as much as the materials themselves.
