Tsar returns through Van Cleef & Arpels’ Les Classiques collection. The interesting possibility is access to an older perfume idea without beginning with an uncertain vintage bottle.

Tsar Les Classiques in Kawabe’s June 2026 Japanese launch announcement. This is the contemporary presentation, not a vintage bottle from the fragrance’s original 1989 release.

Some creative works disappear not because nobody values them, but because the object needed to experience them stops being readily available. Perfume makes that problem unusually intimate. A description cannot substitute for smelling. Tsar, the Van Cleef & Arpels fragrance first introduced in 1989, offers a useful way into this question through the current Les Classiques collection.

A perfume is not preserved by its name alone

The house presents it as an aromatic woody eau de toilette. Kawabe’s June 2026 announcement introduced this edition to Japanese customers and credits perfumer Philippe Bousseton. Its green bottle and historical typography carry an explicit connection to the earlier identity. That regional launch should not be mistaken for the first worldwide appearance of the revived collection.

What holds value here is the possibility of renewed access. A current version lets someone investigate an older perfume idea without beginning with a sealed auction bottle of uncertain storage history. It does not, by itself, prove that the formula is chemically identical to a 1989 release. Continuity of a name, composition and remembered experience are related but different questions.

Encounter the present version first

Seek a sample or an in-person consultation with a stockist before choosing a bottle. We have not worn or tested this edition, so the maker’s scent description is not our tasting verdict. For a vintage purchase, establish provenance, fill level and storage history separately. The most rewarding first investment may simply be time spent learning what this fragrance tradition means to your own sense of smell.
