DISCOVERY / Tension-Set Jewellery & Material Knowledge
The space around the diamond.
Niessing’s Spannring Round makes a diamond appear to float between two ends of a band. The apparent absence of a setting is actually a precise piece of material engineering.

The most noticeable part of Niessing’s Spannring Round may be the small space around its diamond. There is no conventional crown of prongs competing for attention. The stone appears suspended between the ends of a substantial band. What looks like the removal of a setting is really a different way to make one.
Reduction requires more knowledge, not less
Niessing describes a tension-controlled construction using specially developed metal alloys and precise stone selection. The Round design carries Walter Wittek’s authorship. Its circular cross-section and exposed diamond produce a complete composition, not simply a precious stone placed on a neutral support. The maker also records details against individual ring numbers, connecting the finished form to information that can matter later.
This is a useful counterexample to the idea that jewellery becomes more interesting by accumulating ornament. Here, the visible simplicity depends on what the metal can do. The gap is convincing because it has been engineered. Understanding that relationship adds a kind of value that cannot be obtained by adding up the weight of the band and the headline size of the diamond.
The complete ring is the object
Try the precise ring and discuss fit, inspection and any future resizing with Niessing before purchase. Do not assume an unfamiliar setting should be adjusted like a conventional band. For a pre-owned piece, establish identity, condition and the available service route. The point is not that a design reputation guarantees a financial result. It is that an unusually coherent idea can remain compelling through decades of manufacture and use.
