The pattern that becomes the shape.
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and Nature Architects use engineered shrinkage to turn cloth into a three-dimensional garment. The pattern is not decoration. It helps tell the material what to become.

A garment usually begins as pieces of cloth whose edges are joined into a shape. TYPE-V asks the fabric to perform more of that work itself. Its geometric surface is not simply an applied motif. It belongs to a system that allows heat and deliberately differentiated shrinkage to bring a flat textile into three dimensions.
The cloth contains instructions
A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE and Nature Architects developed the collaboration through computational modelling and the Steam Stretch textile process. A prototype appeared in Milan in 2023, followed by commercial garments in 2025. The engineering team’s account explains how the design was adjusted between those stages. This was a process of learning how a proposed geometry would behave as actual cloth, not merely printing a digital image onto clothing.
The attraction is that a technically ambitious idea remains something a person can put on. The garment links pattern, structure and movement rather than asking the wearer to appreciate an invisible innovation on trust. It also gives a fresh reason to look closely at pleating. Similar-looking surfaces can arise from quite different relationships between yarn, heat, cutting and assembly.
An experiment that can be worn
Try the piece in motion and read the exact care instructions. Ask how the formed texture should be maintained and whether the available size works on the intended body, rather than assuming a sculptural photograph demonstrates everyday comfort. The lasting possibility is a new vocabulary for making clothes. It earns attention through what the material does, not through an automatic claim that experimental fashion becomes a collectible asset.
