The chair drawn in empty space.

Konstantin Grcic’s Chair_One makes a seat from a network of aluminium triangles. What looks missing is part of the design.

Konstantin Grcic’s Chair_One for Magis, in a concrete-base version photographed by Sailko. This museum view is not the four-legged stacking model or evidence of current stock.

A chair normally offers a surface. Chair_One offers a network. Konstantin Grcic’s design for Magis builds its seat from triangular openings and narrow aluminium members, making the space between the material almost as conspicuous as the material itself. It looks less like a shell with decoration than a drawing capable of supporting a person.

The openings belong to the structure

Die casting is central to that result. Magis describes a process able to produce the complicated geometry as a coherent seat. The familiar four-legged version and the concrete-base version give the same idea quite different relationships with the ground. Our photograph shows the latter, not the stacking model in the linked specification.

The value lies in that connection between expression and manufacture. The geometry is memorable, but it also invites a useful question about where a structure needs material. Continued production makes it possible to encounter the design as furniture, rather than only as a historical image. A recognisable silhouette is not enough on its own. The object should still earn its place in the room.

Sit before deciding

Try the actual base and seat configuration before buying. Check dimensions, floor protection, finish, cushion options and whether the specific version is intended for outdoor use. A concrete pedestal and a lightweight stacking chair solve different problems. For second-hand examples, inspect coatings, joints and stability. Its significance is a distinctive construction idea, not an assurance that every variant is comfortable for every person or destined to appreciate.
