DISCOVERY / Domestic Architecture & Spatial Experience
Colour that becomes a room.
At Casa Gilardi, colour is not a finishing touch. Luis Barragán uses it with water and light to change the way a domestic interior is understood.

A red plane, a blue wall and water can produce an image that seems almost too complete. Casa Gilardi becomes more interesting when you imagine arriving at that image on foot. The pool belongs to a sequence of rooms, changes of light and domestic routines, not to an isolated composition made for a camera.
The photograph is only one position
Commissioned by Francisco Gilardi in 1975 and built in 1976–77, the Mexico City house was a late work by Luis Barragán. The city’s visitor account describes spaces revealed one after another and a pool within the living and dining area. NOWNESS’s filmed visit adds the resident’s perspective and the jacaranda tree that helped persuade Barragán to accept the project.
What holds value is an unusually concentrated lesson in making atmosphere through architecture. Colour defines relationships rather than merely decorating surfaces. Water adds reflection and a different sense of depth. You do not need to commission a comparable house to take something useful from it. The transferable insight is to think about what one room prepares you to notice in the next.
Enter as a guest
Book through the house’s official website and respect that its owners still live there. Visits require advance reservation, and the published photography policy permits phones rather than professional or semiprofessional cameras. Check the current terms before travelling. The strongest reason to go is not to reproduce the familiar pool image, but to discover the transitions that the photograph cannot contain.

The archival pool photograph is not evidence of current visitor access to every room. Casa Gilardi remains a private residence. The official booking policy takes precedence over older guidebook hours.
