DISCOVERY / Modern Architecture & Living Landscapes
The house that grew into its garden.
Seventy-five years after Lina Bo Bardi’s Casa de Vidro was built, its relationship with the surrounding greenery is as compelling as its glass walls.
Published 28 October 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
A glass house can sound like a declaration of separation: a transparent object set apart from the world. Casa de Vidro invites a more interesting reading. Trees gather around its raised rooms, and the approach places the visitor beneath the house before bringing them into it. The relationship is bodily as well as visual.
A home before it became an icon
Built in 1951 in São Paulo’s Morumbi district, it was Lina Bo Bardi’s first realised architectural work and the home she shared with Pietro Maria Bardi. Instituto Bardi’s seventy-fifth anniversary exhibition opened on 26 September 2026. Its five themes move from the idea and project through design, intimacy and the future, using archival material to place daily life beside the celebrated architecture.
The enduring value is not that the building froze one perfect moment. It is that a strong architectural idea continued to accommodate occupation, collections, conversation and a changing landscape. Lina’s authorship deserves attention beyond the familiar photograph of slender supports and glazing. The house can teach a visitor to ask how an interior frames what grows outside and how a home becomes a cultural resource.
Look for the changes, too
Use the institute’s current booking route before visiting. The anniversary announcement specifies advance reservations for regular visits, so the free opening event should not be mistaken for permanent free entry. Compare contemporary views with archival images and notice what time has added. This is an encounter with a maintained cultural site, not an offer to stay in or acquire the house.
