Can Lis: a house you can learn from.

Not every worthwhile encounter with architecture needs to become a property transaction. Sometimes the useful acquisition is an idea.

An idea does not require ownership

At Can Lis, Jørn Utzon’s house on Mallorca, stone, outlook and the placement of rooms offer a way to think about living with a landscape. An aerial photograph shows how the building occupies its coastal site. A visit offers a different scale of information, the one encountered by a person rather than a camera above the roof.

The Utzon Foundation publishes a practical route in. For 2026, its open-house season runs on Fridays from 22 May to 16 October, between 11am and 2pm. Entry is free, with no reservation required. Capacity is limited to 25 people at a time and visits to 30 minutes. Those are specific visiting windows, not an invitation to arrive whenever the house looks quiet.

Visit with a question

Go with a question. How is a view framed? Where does the light fall? What makes a place feel settled in its surroundings? The lasting value of such an encounter may reappear in a room you arrange or a building decision you later make.
