The glass rods are not an unusual keyboard decoration. They are where the player's wet fingers begin the sound.

The form produces the sound

In the Cristal Baschet, that movement travels through a mechanical acoustic structure and is radiated by large resonating elements. Performer Thomas Bloch describes the relationship between the glass, metal parts and resonators. The forms that make the instrument look like sculpture have an acoustic purpose. Sound and appearance are not separate commissions.

The important discovery is that this is not only an object from experimental music history. Association Structures Sonores Baschet maintains an active route to manufacture and care. Its current workshop page invites enquiries about the Grand Cristal. The association also describes maintenance, hire and educational work. There is a living practice around the object, not just an archive of striking photographs.

A living practice, not an archive

For a musician, collector or institution, the first step should be hearing and understanding the instrument. Ask about configuration, playing, dimensions, transport, maintenance and opportunities to encounter one before considering a commission. Specifications of an individual performer's instrument should not be assumed to describe every new build.

Its WHV mechanism is unusually clear: specialist knowledge becomes a playable physical form, and continued making and teaching keep that knowledge available. Buying one simply because it looks extraordinary would miss much of what makes it extraordinary.
