The piano that is not furniture.
A Steinway Model D may dominate a room, but its value is decided at the keyboard, inside the action and through the care that keeps it responsive.

At 274 centimetres long and about 480 kilograms, the Steinway Model D is difficult to mistake for anything but a concert grand. Yet scale is the least interesting reason to look closely. This is an instrument whose response is produced by a changing relationship among rim, soundboard, strings, action, regulation, room and pianist.
A structure under tension
Steinway specifies a continuous bent rim made from seventeen layers of hard rock maple. Its current Model D page also describes five solid-spruce braces and a soundboard tapered from the centre toward the rim. These are maker specifications. They explain the construction, not how a particular piano sounds today.
Age changes the proposition. Steinway’s serial lookup can help establish manufacture date and, where available, factory records. Its restoration material also makes clear how extensive later work can become, including action and soundboard replacement. Other respected rebuilders may take different approaches, so the scope and authorship of any intervention need to be documented rather than hidden behind the word restored.
The individual voice
What holds value is the instrument’s capacity to answer a player. Two Model Ds of similar age can feel and sound markedly different because of use, climate, maintenance, voicing and rebuilding. The famous model creates a reason to listen. It cannot do the listening for you.
Bring an independent piano technician and a pianist who understands the intended use. Confirm serial, structure, pinblock, soundboard, action, tuning stability and restoration history. Then hear the piano in the room it must serve. Transport, climate control and continuing preparation belong in the ownership cost from the beginning.
