E-1027 can be reduced too easily to an elegant white house above the Mediterranean. Eileen Gray’s first architectural work is more exacting than the view. She designed the fixed and movable furniture, lighting, storage and transitions through which a person would actually inhabit it.

More than a white house by the sea

Gray developed the house with Jean Badovici between 1926 and 1929. Cap Moderne describes a 120 square metre interior arranged across two levels, with terraces, independent rooms and devices that open, divide and transform the plan. Intimacy and sociability were designed together rather than treated as opposites.

The details make the position clear. A bedhead stores what the occupant needs. Folding windows turn the room toward the horizon. Screens, alcoves and separate outdoor access let people be together without sacrificing privacy. The house was a critique of modern interiors that felt correct but impossible to live in.

Restoring a relationship

What holds value is the relationship between those decisions. By the time public bodies acquired the site, the house was degraded and emptied of its furniture. Restoration included structure, finishes, gardens and reconstructed pieces. The official account marks those reconstructions instead of quietly presenting every visible element as an untouched original.

When judging another authored home, look beyond the famous exterior. Ask which interior elements survive, what was reconstructed and whether alterations preserve or dissolve the original relationships. A house can keep its address while losing the way of life that gave its rooms meaning.
