The hole in the marble.
Flos Arco puts overhead light where there is no ceiling fitting. Its most revealing detail may be the hole through its heavy marble base.

An overhead light normally asks you to commit to a position in the ceiling. Arco makes a different bargain. Its long stainless-steel curve reaches out from a floor-standing base, placing the light away from the weight that supports it. The empty space beneath the arch is as important as the polished metal.
Marble doing a job
Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni designed the lamp in 1962. The Carrara marble is not simply a luxury finish. It is a compact counterweight. Even the round hole has a practical purpose: a pole passed through it helps two people lift and move the heavy block. An apparently decorative feature turns out to explain how the object is handled.
That relationship between appearance and use is the lasting discovery. The telescopic stem and adjustable light position let the lamp address a room rather than merely occupy a corner. Flos still manufactures Arco and lists replacement components, including reflector and arm parts. Continued support matters more to everyday ownership than repeating that a lamp is famous.
An icon still needs the right room
Before choosing one, measure the full reach, the base position and the route people will take around it. A large arc does not become compact because it looks visually light. On an older example, establish authenticity, electrical condition and the availability of the specific part needed. Arco earns attention because its memorable shape remains connected to a useful idea, not because every room needs a recognisable signature.
