What an old bottle needs.
Penfolds’ recorking clinics turn an ageing bottle into a question of condition, custody and informed intervention.
Published 13 September 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
An old bottle is not preserved by age alone. Its fill level, cork, storage and handling decide whether time has developed the wine or simply damaged it. Penfolds has run recorking clinics since 1991 to examine that distinction in eligible bottles.
A service built around limits
The programme is for Penfolds red wines at least fifteen years old and sealed under cork. Specialists assess condition and may open, taste, top and recork a bottle. Penfolds says a bottle can be recorked only once. Owners can also receive a condition certificate and an indicative valuation where appropriate.
The intervention is useful because it is bounded. A clinic cannot reverse oxidation, poor storage or a wine already past its best. Opening also changes the object. The new cork, capsule and documentation should become part of its record rather than disappear behind the romance of preservation.
The bottle keeps its history
What holds value is informed custody. A sound bottle retains the possibility of being enjoyed, while an honest assessment gives the owner better information about what remains. The service makes condition visible instead of assuming that a respected label and an old date are enough.
For any mature wine, begin with where it has been, not what a price guide says. Record storage, fill level, seepage, label and capsule condition. Ask who performed any intervention and retain the paperwork. If the wine is opened, the most convincing return may be the occasion itself.
