The vintage Yquem chose not to make.

There is no 2012 Château d’Yquem. The estate harvested grapes that year, but after post-harvest tasting it decided that the result would not carry its principal name. A missing vintage can say more about a standard than another release would.

The label as a decision

Decanter reported direct confirmation from the estate. Its spokesperson said the level of quality was not satisfactory to become Yquem. Poor October weather followed a late start to harvest, creating a decision that the property described as difficult.

This was not scarcity created to stimulate demand. It was a refusal to let the label stand in for something the team did not believe met its criterion. The distinction matters. Rarity can be engineered. Restraint becomes meaningful only when it protects a legible and consistent promise.

Absence is not scarcity theatre

What holds value is trust in the act of selection. The estate’s current material for 2023 tells a different story, with technical details for harvest dates, blend, acidity and residual sugar. Those numbers identify a wine. They do not make the producer’s praise an independent assessment or turn a new release into an investment case.

For any bottle, the vintage decision is only the beginning. Establish provenance, storage, fill level, capsule and label condition. Compare current offers with realised transactions on the same basis and include buyer costs, insurance, storage and the difficulty of resale. The best use may still be to open it with the right people.
