Forty years before the cork.

Blandy’s Sercial 1975 spent four decades in cask before bottling. The number on the label is only the beginning of its story.

An old wine invites a simple calculation: subtract the vintage from the present year. Blandy’s Sercial 1975 makes that calculation look incomplete. The producer records forty years in seasoned American oak, followed by bottling in 2015. This is not a bottle that spent all those decades waiting, untouched, on a shelf.

A journey through the lodge

Its February 2016 technical sheet describes a slow journey through the Funchal lodge. Five years on the warm upper floor, twenty on the second, then fifteen on the cooler first floor. Moving the wine was part of the work, a decision about concentration and freshness rather than the passive passage of time.

The sheet identifies the method as canteiro and the wine as a dry Sercial, in the Vintage or Frasqueira category. The producer’s record lets us distinguish the harvest, the years in wood and the bottling. Those are three different pieces of information. None should disappear behind the romance of an old date.

What the year cannot tell you

What holds value is the accumulated work that cannot simply be hurried into existence, and the possibility of encountering it in a glass. That makes this a compelling wine to learn about. It does not make every old Madeira bottle desirable, authentic or fairly priced.

If a bottle becomes a real possibility, ask which bottling it is, where it has been kept and what its condition tells you. Treat the producer’s historical sheet as a starting point, not a condition report for someone else’s bottle. And allow for a different kind of return: the conversation and attention that opening something remarkable can create.
