DISCOVERY / Footwear & Repairable Wardrobes

The next sole is part of the shoe.

J.M. Weston’s 180 loafer turns eighty in 2026. The useful story is not the anniversary itself, but the construction and restoration behind another period of wear.

An anniversary can make a shoe feel important without explaining why it should remain in use. The J.M. Weston 180 offers a more practical question. What happens when the sole wears out, while the upper still has useful life ahead of it?

Longevity needs a service route

Introduced in 1946, the loafer is being revisited for its eightieth anniversary in 2026. Behind the new finishes sits a longer production logic. Weston describes stitched construction that permits successive soles and a workshop dedicated to restoration at its Limoges manufacture. That support is more relevant to enduring ownership than the mere survival of a model name.

The opportunity is to develop a wardrobe around objects that can be maintained rather than repeatedly replaced. A repairable shoe is not indestructible, and a service department cannot compensate for poor fit or badly damaged leather. But construction and accessible expertise together make longevity something an owner can act on. Familiarity can be a strength when the underlying object continues to work.

Buy the fit, then maintain it

Try the appropriate size and width in person where possible. Ask the store to explain the repair options for the exact pair, including likely costs, turnaround and limits. When buying used, have the upper, lining and previous repairs assessed before assuming another resole will be straightforward. The photographed anniversary edition illustrates the continuing design, not a recommendation to pay a collectible premium for it.
