DISCOVERY / Working Vehicles & Adaptable Machines
The vehicle built around a job.
The Unimog 406 belongs to a different vehicle conversation. Its appeal begins with ground clearance, working equipment and the ability to turn a difficult task into an engineering brief.

An Unimog 406 does not need a remote wilderness backdrop to become interesting. Look instead at the space beneath it, the short cab and the equipment a particular chassis carries. This is a vehicle conceived as a working platform. A desirable machine can begin with a difficult job rather than a desirable lifestyle.
Capability has a physical shape
Mercedes-Benz records the 406’s unveiling at the 1962 DLG exhibition, responding to demand for larger and more powerful agricultural equipment. Municipal and industrial work followed. The manufacturer identifies portal axles as a continuing Unimog principle: gearing at the wheel ends allows the axle line to sit above the wheel centres. Different engines, cabs and working configurations make the series more varied than one recognisable outline suggests.
A machine able to carry different tools can participate in more than one working life. That versatility is what makes the 406 rewarding to investigate, while its physical design makes the underlying idea understandable. A particular vehicle’s configuration matters: the same family name can cover very different working histories. The restored green example in the photograph is one expression of that broader platform.
Meet the machine before imagining ownership
The Unimog Museum near Gaggenau offers a practical route into the wider engineering story, including separately arranged demonstrations and driver training. Check the exact programme and suitability rather than expecting to drive a 406 on ordinary admission. If ownership follows, have a specialist assess the actual chassis, corrosion, modifications and parts requirements. Admiration becomes more rewarding when it includes the knowledge that a working machine demands.
