DISCOVERY / Cartography & Globes

Turn the world the other way up.

A handmade globe makes the familiar map strange again, without changing the planet.

The maker’s 36cm inverted-cartography globe. Commission details can differ. It identifies the inverted 36cm commission, while map details, base and personalisation can differ between completed globes.

North at the top is so familiar that it can feel like a physical law. A globe with the opposite orientation exposes the habit. Geography stays where it is. Your first reading of it does not.

A map made by hand

Bellerby & Co.’s 36cm Upside Down Globe offers this change of perspective as a made object. The current commission combines inverted cartography with a wooden base, with choices that include walnut and oak. The workshop describes a process of preparing and painting paper gores, applying them to the sphere, finishing the surface and assembling the base. Here, a map is both information and skilled physical work.

The interesting question is not whether a handmade globe contains more information than a phone. It does something else. It stays in a room, invites an unplanned look and makes a whole world available to the hand. Inverted orientation gives that familiar domestic role an extra intellectual purpose.

Commission a present-day object honestly

Commission it as a contemporary object. Discuss the map, text edits, base, lead time and final specification before paying a deposit. Borders and place names require decisions, and today's cartography will become dated. Personalisation can deepen the owner's attachment while narrowing its appeal to somebody else. Its strongest value case is authorship joined to curiosity, not the assumption that bespoke work automatically becomes a collectible.

This is a current commission, not an antique map. Handmade and bespoke do not establish scarcity-driven resale value.
