DISCOVERY / Bags & Design Authorship
The handbag Dieter Rams designed for Ingeborg.
TSATSAS brings a personal 1963 design into contemporary use. The 931 makes a familiar design philosophy unexpectedly intimate.

Dieter Rams is usually encountered through a radio, a shelving system or a set of design principles. A handbag shifts the scale of that familiarity. The 931 began as a personal design for his wife, Ingeborg, with the same attention to proportion applied to something carried close to the body.
A personal design returns
TSATSAS records the original design in 1963 and the introduction of its collaboration with Rams in November 2018. Its current account presents the bag in burgundy calfskin, made in the company’s family leather workshop in Offenbach. This is a contemporary production of the design, not a surviving handbag from the 1960s.
The appeal is how quietly the object carries its authorship. The rectangular form and restrained construction invite attention without needing a conspicuous monogram. For someone interested in design, it offers an unusually personal route into Rams’s work and an object with an actual daily role.
Carry it before choosing
Check the opening, carrying options, internal capacity and how the leather feels against the clothes you wear. Ask about care and repair before purchase. The story can enrich use, but it should not compensate for a bag that does not accommodate your essentials or suit the way you move.
