At Lesage, the valuable thing is learned.

A course in artistic embroidery changes what a person can make and what they can recognise in a finished object.

The school’s 1920s-inspired advanced-course embroidery study. An illustration of the curriculum, not a promise of a beginner’s finished result.

Looking at a richly embroidered surface is one experience. Trying to make a small section of it is another. The second encounter can change the first permanently, making time, tension and precision visible in work that previously seemed simply decorative.

A curriculum rather than a souvenir

École Lesage offers introductory, advanced and specialist courses. Its advanced programme draws on the house archives and moves through styles associated with different periods. The school recommends an introductory Lunéville-hook course for students unfamiliar with that tool. A curriculum is a more substantial proposition than a loosely described luxury workshop.

The value leaves with the participant. Even a first course can establish a vocabulary for looking and a basis for further practice, though it cannot confer the competence of a trained embroiderer. This is an unusually direct way to invest attention in something that can enrich later making, collecting and appreciation.

Choose a realistic starting point

Choose a course that matches your experience and confirm teaching language, dates, materials and the required frame. Allow for practice between sessions if the programme calls for it. The pictured embroidered study belongs to the school’s course presentation and is not a claim about what every beginner will complete.
