An empty fountain pen is not a finished object. With the Pelikan M800, a turn of the end knob draws another supply of ink into the barrel. A small mechanical action returns the same tool to work.

The refill is part of the design

Pelikan specifies a differential piston mechanism for its Souverän 800 fountain pen. The current black-green version combines a striped cellulose-acetate barrel with four available nib widths. These are choices with consequences for use, not merely variations to collect. The maker publishes filling and cleaning instructions, and directs repair enquiries through dealers, regional subsidiaries or its service form.

Independent experience adds a useful qualification. A firsthand review of the M800 Stone Garden describes the weight of its brass piston assembly and a firm fine nib. That is an account of one variant, not a universal verdict on comfort. It does suggest why the right writing instrument cannot be chosen solely by reading the model name or admiring the finish.

Try the sentence before buying the symbol

Ask a retailer how you may test the size and nib without affecting return eligibility. Use the kind of paper you actually write on, follow the maker’s ink and cleaning guidance, and obtain a service assessment for a used example with a stiff piston or damaged nib. Refilling alone does not prove a lower environmental footprint, and a gold nib does not establish financial value. The more persuasive outcome is quieter: a tool you keep reaching for, with a practical route back to use when it needs attention.
