Namiki: a surface worth slowing down for.

The surprise is what Namiki leaves out. No painted landscape, no animal, no elaborate scene. On the Lacquer Vermilion No.20, colour and surface carry the object.

Simplicity made through work

Namiki identifies the finish as Roiro Urushi and the makers as the Kokkokai artisan group. Its account of the technique describes repeated lacquer work and polishing, including charcoal polishing. The apparent simplicity is the result of work, not its absence. A large No.20 nib in 18-carat gold sits within a pen intended to write, rather than remain under glass.

This is the Yukari Royale size, not the larger Emperor. That distinction matters in the hand and in the filling system. The retailer’s specification identifies a cartridge or converter system, with a CON-70 supplied. Attractive photographs of another Namiki model are not a substitute for checking the one you will use.

Try the instrument before the symbol

Its WHV case is the meeting of a living craft and a repeated personal act. A letter, a signature or a page of notes gives the lacquer a reason to leave its box. Try the size and nib before committing. At Goulet, the stated return restriction after inking makes a dry test particularly important.
