DISCOVERY / Furniture & Industrial Imagination
A tractor seat, reconsidered.
The Castiglioni brothers’ Mezzadro moves an agricultural silhouette into the home. Its wit depends on how the parts work together, not simply where the seat came from.

A tractor seat in a living room sounds like a joke until you look at the whole construction. Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni’s Mezzadro combines a shaped metal seat with a curved steel support and a wooden crosspiece. The familiar agricultural form becomes one part of a carefully balanced domestic object.
Recognition is only the beginning
Zanotta dates the design to 1957 and identifies a lacquered metal seat, chromed steel stem and steam-treated beech foot in its current specification. The museum account helps explain the deliberately different origins of the component forms. That is not the same as saying every newly manufactured stool contains salvaged machinery. The design reuses an idea, not necessarily a previously used part.
Its value is the change in perception it makes possible. Industrial forms can possess intelligence and character before anyone calls them furniture. Mezzadro asks you to notice that intelligence, then gives it a new setting. The exposed construction also makes the object easy to read. There is little upholstery or enclosure between the person sitting and the mechanical proposition beneath them.
Sit with the idea
Try the stool before choosing it for a room. Its movement, height and shaped seat are a specific experience, not a universal answer to comfortable seating. For an older example, establish maker, period, completeness and condition rather than relying on the silhouette alone. Continuing production offers a direct route to the design without requiring a hunt for a historically significant original.

Industrial references are not a claim that current production uses reclaimed tractor parts. Vintage attribution and condition need separate verification.
