DISCOVERY / Jewellery & Personal Meaning

Marie Lichtenberg’s Love You Lapis, a message in stone.

An editioned locket builds a personal message into a small gold and lapis form meant to be worn.

The maker’s photograph shows the locket on the body so its scale can be read.

The Love You Lapis locket carries its design around a small barrel. The house records six lapis plates, a ruby heart and a moonstone in an eighteen-karat yellow gold piece. Look at the pendant on the body as well as in a close-up. The scale changes how much of the message someone else can see.

Lichtenberg’s house traces the design to the first locket she drew for her daughter. The version documented here belongs to a numbered edition of ten. The number identifies a particular object. The more interesting design decision is how a private message survives in a piece intended for regular wear.

If you are considering one, ask about the number, certificate, chain length and care for the stones. Inspect the stone plates and edges on a second-hand example. The condition and the meaning you give the piece deserve attention independently of the edition size.
