J Craft Torpedo, the wood is not the hull.
The mahogany deck suggests an earlier age. Beneath it, the Torpedo is a modern composite boat with a distinctly different ownership story.

The polished deck is what catches your eye. It is also what can lead you to misread the J Craft Torpedo. This is not simply a newly built version of an old wooden runabout. Under the mahogany lies a modern composite hull.
Mahogany above a composite structure
J Craft’s specification describes a vinylester, fibreglass and PVC-core construction, coupled to Volvo Penta IPS drives. The Swedish-built boat belongs to the 42-foot class. Engine choices and equipment vary, so the Torpedo name alone does not identify an exact performance or ownership specification.
That meeting of systems is the interesting part. The deck brings visible handwork and a maintenance obligation. The propulsion offers a different handling arrangement from the older boats its silhouette recalls. Neither should be allowed to disappear behind a nostalgic description. A contemporary craft can borrow a visual language while solving the practical problem differently.
Ask what ownership involves
Inspect the finish closely and discuss how it will be protected where the boat is kept. Request the maintenance schedule for the deck, propulsion and any stabilisation equipment, together with the support available near your berth. Take a sea trial in realistic conditions. The boat’s value for an owner depends on the days it makes possible and the care it requires, not on assuming that handmade automatically means financially collectible.
