DISCOVERY / Ephemeral Architecture & Seasonal Making
What remains when the room melts.
At Sweden’s ICEHOTEL, the winter rooms are not meant to survive spring. What continues is the ability to make them, and the experience of inhabiting something temporary.

Clear columns frame a blue-lit interior, with ice chandeliers overhead. The photograph records the 2014 main hall by Alessandro Falca and AnnaSofia Mååg. More recent rooms include Sweep Me Off My Feet by Elin Julin and Ida Mangsbo for winter 2025–2026. Neither is a promise of next winter’s interior, because disappearance is part of the work.
The room goes, the knowledge continues
In Jukkasjärvi, the seasonal hotel is made again through an international design and construction process. Ice harvested from the Torne River becomes a material for rooms, halls and sculpture. The winter structure eventually melts. Separate year-round ice accommodation exists too, so the seasonal and permanent operations should not be treated as the same thing.
This is a useful challenge to a narrow reading of what holds value. A room can be temporary while the skills, collaborations and memories associated with making and inhabiting it continue. The annual rebuilding creates another opportunity to use that knowledge. Permanence is not always the objective, and a beautiful account of a natural cycle is not by itself a complete environmental assessment.
Book the right season, not an old photograph
ICEHOTEL currently plans to open edition 37 on 11 December 2026. Check the actual room, dates, cold-sleeping arrangements and warm facilities before booking. Do not choose from an archival image without establishing what it depicts. The compelling experience is not owning a rare object or accumulating another hotel name. It is spending time in a carefully made space whose limits are unusually clear, and noticing what you remember after the material has gone.
