DISCOVERY / Public Art & Material Reconsideration

The material you recognise too late.

Bordalo II’s Half Rabbit makes an animal appear from discarded things on a corner in Gaia. The second look, when the materials become recognisable, is where the work begins.

At a street corner in Vila Nova de Gaia, a large rabbit seems to emerge from the building itself. Move closer and the animal breaks into recognisable fragments of discarded material. That delay between seeing a creature and seeing what made it is central to Bordalo II’s Half Rabbit.

First the animal, then its ingredients

The work was documented in 2017 as part of the Portuguese artist’s practice of making animals from waste. Its position across a corner gives it a physical presence that a flat mural would not have. Differences in colour and exposed material encourage the eye to move between the image as a whole and the components that keep interrupting it.

This is not evidence that any discarded object becomes valuable when labelled art. The transformation depends on selection, scale, assembly and the ability to make the subject legible without completely hiding its ingredients. Nor does a sculpture demonstrate that a city has solved its waste problem. Its more defensible contribution is perceptual: it makes the familiar category of rubbish less easy to ignore.

Attention is the accessible part

Encounter it as public work and take time for both distances, the street view and the close inspection. Respect the neighbouring buildings and people using the pavement. The artist also makes other works, but a separate edition is not a piece of this installation and should be assessed on its own documentation. Here, the most accessible value is the possibility that an unexpected animal changes how someone looks at ordinary materials afterwards.
