The car that kept an unusual question alive.

The Renault Avantime gave a coupé the space and light of a people carrier. Its appeal survives in a driving environment that the familiar categories still do not quite explain.

The Renault Avantime offers a different kind of extravagance: space and light where a conventional coupé would usually narrow around its occupants. Its tall glasshouse and expansive cabin are the point. You do not need to find it beautiful to recognise that it proposed a genuinely different place to spend a journey.

Room to question the category

Renault’s archive credits Thierry Metroz with the design and Matra in Romorantin with production. The road car arrived in 2001 after a 1999 concept. Based on the Espace platform, it combined people-carrier proportions with a coupé identity. The large doors and pillarless side opening make the compromise tangible rather than merely a marketing label.

The WHV case is the survival of a particular design proposition. A short commercial life does not make that proposition meaningless, just as rarity does not make it financially safe. An Avantime can offer an owner something difficult to substitute with a newer conventional car. That experience only remains attractive if the actual vehicle is sound and supported.

The unusual parts deserve ordinary scrutiny

Consult an informed specialist before buying. Inspect the door mechanisms, glass, seals, body condition, electrical equipment and engine-specific service history. Establish availability of trim and model-specific parts rather than assuming that shared Espace origins solve everything. Published price guides are dated context, not a current valuation or forecast. The worthwhile purchase is a complete, usable example whose costs you understand, not simply the cheapest survivor of an interesting idea.
