A different idea of a bicycle.

The Moulton NS D-Pylon makes compact wheels, suspension and a separable frame part of one enduring engineering idea.

The Moulton does not look unusual for attention alone. Its small wheels, suspended frame and open construction belong to an engineering argument developed by Alex Moulton after his work on the Mini’s rubber suspension.

Small wheels, complete argument

The current NS D-Pylon uses 20 inch wheels, Flexitor front suspension, Hydrolastic rear suspension and a separable stainless steel frame. Moulton lists it as hand built in England with silver fillet brazing. At the time of checking, direct UK orders carried an eight to ten month lead time.

Compact wheels can accelerate quickly and make luggage and step-through access easier, while suspension addresses ride quality. The separable frame can simplify transport. None of these features establishes that it will suit every rider. Fit, handling, gearing and the intended route still decide whether the design becomes useful.

A bicycle to use, not merely admire

What holds value is a coherent identity that remains in production and supported by a specialist maker. The visible structure is not decoration added after the engineering. It is the engineering. Continued manufacture also gives a prospective owner a clearer route to current parts and knowledge than an orphaned experiment would.

Ride one before treating the price as proof. Confirm fit, specification, delivery, warranty and the service route in your country. Older Moultons need their own parts check because the factory says it cannot provide parts or service information for pre-1980 models.
