DISCOVERY / Wine & Recovered Knowledge
The wine that had to be relearned.
Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance is a modern revival, not an unbroken bottle of history. Its interest lies in recovered ambition and the exacting work of making a sweet wine today.

Historical admirers are easy to list. Recreating a meaningful wine after a long interruption is harder. Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance is worth approaching through that second story. The modern revival began with the 1986 vintage, rather than an uninterrupted chain connecting today’s bottles to every famous reference to Constantia wine.
A revival is a new act of making
A current technical record brings the romance back to work in the vineyard and cellar. For 2022, the estate identifies Muscat de Frontignan and eighteen picking passes between March and April. Batches were handled separately before maturation in barrels and larger wooden vessels. These are details of that vintage, not a timeless recipe to apply to every bottle.
The value is the recovery and continued refinement of a particular ambition. A historical name only becomes useful when contemporary practice gives it substance. Sweet wine also offers an alternative to thinking that seriousness requires a dry, powerful red. That is an invitation to broaden a palate, not a tasting verdict from WHV or a claim that age automatically improves the wine.
Read the vintage, not only the legend
Begin with a well-kept bottle or a small pour from a knowledgeable merchant or restaurant. Identify producer and vintage, since Constantia’s wider wine history is not exclusive to this modern label. For older bottles, ask about storage, fill level and provenance. Our photograph shows the Klein Constantia vineyard landscape, not a certified parcel of the 2022 harvest. Historical resonance should sharpen questions rather than replace them.
