DISCOVERY / Bathing Architecture & Material Experience

A building you enter through water.

Peter Zumthor’s thermal baths at Vals turn local quartzite, light and water into architecture a visitor experiences bodily. The place does not need to be owned to matter.

Most architectural photographs keep the viewer outside the building’s physical demands. At Therme Vals, the subject is a place made to be entered through bathing. Peter Zumthor’s 1996 thermal baths make stone, enclosure, light and water part of the same experience. Their interest cannot be reduced to the most recognisable photograph of a pool.

Stone becomes a place to move

The operator identifies raw concrete and around 60,000 slabs of Vals quartzite in the construction. The local stone provides more than a decorative reference to the valley. It gives the building a layered material language that a bather can encounter through movement between spaces. That relationship is the architectural proposition, not a claim that stone alone makes any place profound.

A day visitor need not own or stay in the hotel to investigate the baths. Current operator information requires an online reservation and limits ticket numbers. It also excludes electronic devices with cameras, including phones and tablets. Those rules make the encounter less available for constant recording and more dependent on actually spending time in the place.

Put the camera away

Check the current entry conditions, age rules and operating hours before travelling. Allow the visit to be about transitions rather than collecting proof of every room. Notice how a material can feel different through changing light, temperature and enclosure. The photograph here records an exterior, not the whole bathing sequence. What may stay with you is a more precise understanding of architecture through the body, without needing a medical benefit or a financial valuation to justify it.
