DISCOVERY / Site-Specific Art & Island Encounters

The water that makes you stay.

At Teshima Art Museum, water emerges from the floor beneath a low concrete shell. Rei Naito and Ryue Nishizawa make an encounter that cannot be reduced to the object you came to see.

A museum can ask you to move from object to object. Teshima Art Museum offers a different proposition: remain with something that is still unfolding. Water emerges from the floor, gathers and moves within a low space whose apparent emptiness is part of the encounter.

The building does not close the world out

Artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa brought their work together on a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The concrete shell has no interior pillars, and two oval openings admit light, air and sounds from outside. Naito’s Matrix dates from 2010. The water is not simply a decorative accompaniment to an otherwise finished room.

The institution describes a setting connected with restored rice terraces and the changing conditions of the island. A visitor does not receive exactly the same work of light and weather on every day. That is part of its interest. The value may begin with a more patient way of looking at small movements that ordinarily disappear beneath the pace of a museum itinerary.

Reserve time for the encounter

Reserve a timed admission and check the seasonal opening calendar before planning the island journey. Benesse states that when online tickets sell out, there are no same-day on-site tickets. The exterior photograph identifies the architecture and landscape, not the interior water work. Allow enough room in the visit for attention itself to become the activity. Something can remain with you precisely because it cannot be collected and carried away.
