DISCOVERY / Architectural Reuse & Contemporary Art

A circle inside another century.

The Bourse de Commerce in Paris keeps its historical envelope while making room for a contemporary collection. The new intervention is interesting because it makes the older building more visible, not less.

A circular building can hold more than one moment in time. At the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, the historical envelope and Tadao Ando’s contemporary intervention remain recognisably different. Their encounter is more revealing than a restoration that tries to make every surface appear to belong to the same century.

Reuse does not require pretending nothing changed

The site carries traces of an eighteenth-century grain market, its later metal-and-glass dome and the nineteenth-century commercial exchange. It opened in its present museum role in 2021. The transformation involved Ando, NeM / Niney et Marca Architectes and the conservation architect Pierre-Antoine Gatier. New use and the care of historical fabric were parts of the same commission.

The Pinault Collection now supplies changing exhibitions rather than one permanent sequence of objects. That matters to the building’s continuing life. The rotunda can become a different encounter as the programme changes, while routes through the architecture keep older material and the new spatial order in conversation. A famous collector’s name is not, by itself, the explanation of that value.

Look at the building between the works

Visit with two kinds of attention. Follow the current exhibition, then notice the spaces that frame it, the skylight and the distinction between old and new surfaces. Check the programme rather than expecting an artwork from an earlier photograph to remain installed. The lasting architectural idea is practical: reuse can introduce a clear new voice while allowing a building’s previous lives to remain intelligible.
