DISCOVERY / Electrostatic Audio & Listening
A different way to move air.
The STAX SR-007A belongs to a headphone tradition built around an unusually thin moving diaphragm. Its appeal begins with an engineering choice and ends with listening.
Published 28 October 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
The SR-007A does not need a bright screen or a catalogue of wireless features to be interesting. Its circular enclosures belong to another idea of personal audio: a dedicated listening place, a purpose-built driver unit and an unusually direct encounter with a recording. The attraction is a particular way of working, not a universal upgrade.
A headphone that asks for a system
STAX records the SR-007A in its 2007 product history, alongside the black overseas SR-007MK2. It is an electrostatic earspeaker, using a charged diaphragm acted on by surrounding electrodes rather than an ordinary moving-coil driver. That architecture requires compatible specialised equipment. The newer SR-007S continues the family, but its specification should not be read backwards into the older model pictured here.
The WHV case is technical distinctiveness that remains open to personal examination. Listen for how a familiar voice, ensemble or quiet passage is presented, then decide whether the difference matters to you. Manufacturer descriptions of detail or naturalness are not independent measurements and cannot substitute for that encounter. Comfort and the room in which you listen are part of the choice.
Audition the complete arrangement
Before buying a used pair, establish the exact model, compatible driver, regional electrical requirements and available specialist service. Ask about the condition of the cable, pads and transducers, and audition the complete system at a comfortable volume. These are open headphones for a suitable environment, not a promise of isolation on a commute. Their interest lies in use rather than presumed financial appreciation.
