DISCOVERY / Contemporary Cameras & Deliberate Constraints
The camera without a card slot.
The Sigma BF replaces a familiar memory-card door with internal storage and pares its controls back. The interesting question is whether removing choices can change the way a photographer pays attention.

Open the usual door for a memory card and you discover that the Sigma BF has made a different decision. Photographs live in approximately 230GB of internal storage, with transfers through USB-C. The omission is not an incidental specification. It belongs to an unusually determined attempt to simplify the camera as an object.
Less hardware makes a particular proposal
Introduced in 2025, the BF uses an aluminium unibody machined from a solid block. A few controls, pressure-sensitive haptic buttons and a separate small status monitor establish a compact interface. The L-Mount still allows interchangeable lenses. Simplicity here concerns how the photographer meets the system, not the removal of every possibility inside it.
Sigma announced an iF Gold Award for the BF in March 2026. Recognition supplies a reason to look, but the more useful investigation is personal. Does the relationship between live view, a selected setting and the physical controls make the camera easier to use for the pictures you actually make? A deliberate constraint can be productive without becoming universally preferable.
Try the whole workflow
Try photographing and transferring a short sequence before deciding. The absence of removable cards changes backup and offloading habits, so include those steps in the demonstration. Ask about battery replacement and the service route for the complete digital instrument. What may remain valuable is a distinctive, familiar way of seeing, not a promise that a seamless metal shell makes electronics permanent.

The supplied photograph presents several views of one BF design, not multiple cameras included in a purchase. Internal storage is not an automatic backup. WHV has not tested the camera, and the 2026 award is distinct from its 2025 introduction.
