DISCOVERY / Cameras & Everyday Creative Practice
The camera that is already with you.
The Ricoh GR IV makes a serious photographic tool small enough for ordinary days. Its most interesting specification is the chance that you actually brought it.

The most capable camera in the cupboard cannot photograph the walk home. Ricoh’s GR IV starts with that ordinary problem. Introduced in 2025, it combines an APS-C sensor with a fixed lens in a body small enough to accompany days that were never planned around photography.
A limitation that becomes a habit
The lens gives a view equivalent to 28mm on a full-frame camera. There is no optical zoom to turn a distant subject into a close one. Instead, a familiar angle of view becomes something the photographer learns. Stabilisation, quick operation and configurable controls support that habit without requiring a bag of lenses.
What can endure here is not the electronics themselves but a relationship with looking. Repeated use of one focal length can make composition more instinctive and encourage attention to unremarkable streets, gestures and light. A phone may already do enough for your needs. The GR makes sense when its handling and photographic controls change how often or how deliberately you work.
Buy the practice, not the shortage
Try the grip, screen and field of view before buying. Check local stock, warranty, battery provision and repair arrangements for the exact version. The standard GR IV shown here is not the Monochrome or HDF model. Do not mistake difficulty finding stock for evidence of lasting financial value. Its strongest case begins after purchase, with photographs that would otherwise never have been made.

This is the standard colour GR IV introduced in 2025. It is not a road-tested review, a recommendation to pay scarcity premiums or a claim of indefinite electronic serviceability.
