Nostalgia, with a different machine.
Renault’s 5 Turbo 3E borrows a familiar silhouette but proposes a very different mechanical arrangement. The engineering deserves attention before the collectible narrative.
Published 21 October 2026 · WHV · Public-source editorial note
The wide shoulders invite an immediate comparison with the original Renault 5 Turbo. The more interesting connection is the willingness to put an unusual machine inside a compact, familiar form. Renault’s electric 5 Turbo 3E uses two rear in-wheel motors, rather than merely fitting conventional electric running gear beneath a nostalgic body.
Look behind the familiar outline
The distinction matters because the original car’s story cannot establish the new project’s value. Renault’s July 2026 Goodwood update described a running prototype and deliveries planned from 2027. A public demonstration is a meaningful development step, but it is not the same as an established population of customer cars with years of service history.
For WHV, this is a project worth following because its architecture is specific and intelligible. Putting propulsion at the wheels raises substantive questions about packaging, control and maintenance. Those questions are more useful than treating a numbered production plan or a familiar badge as an automatic claim on future collectors. New things can deserve attention before their endurance has been proved.
An idea to follow, not a return to forecast
Follow the final homologated specification and ownership information as the programme develops. Anyone considering a reservation should establish delivery terms, service capability, wheel-motor repair arrangements and the conditions attached to a deposit. The lasting outcome is still open. What exists now is an unusually clear opportunity to watch whether a bold engineering proposition becomes a convincing car in everyday ownership.
