DISCOVERY / Public Architecture & Living Traditions

The building that borrows the shore.

Löyly’s timber envelope is a screen, a silhouette and a set of places to look out. Avanto’s Helsinki sauna gives an everyday tradition an unusually public architectural form.

From the waterfront, Löyly appears closer to a folded piece of landscape than a conventional building. Its timber slats wrap the saunas and restaurant in a low, angular form. The sea remains part of the experience instead of becoming scenery glimpsed through one carefully positioned window.

A boundary with more than one job

Avanto Architects completed the Helsinki project in 2016. The slatted envelope gives bathers privacy while preserving outward views, and the stepped roof terraces offer other ways to occupy the edge. The architecture prize account describes timber intended to acquire a grey patina, acknowledging weather as part of the building’s appearance rather than an interruption to it.

Its enduring value is not the novelty of a sculptural roof. It is the relationship between a shared Finnish practice and a public setting that makes participation possible. Someone can book a sauna session and understand the design through movement, changing temperature and the distance between shelter and open air. The building’s purpose explains its form.

Enter through the activity

Reserve the public sauna separately from a restaurant table and check the current arrangements. The operator requires swimwear in mixed public areas, and sea access depends on conditions. Visiting need not involve swimming. The photograph records the exterior in 2016, not its present maintenance state. Look for how the screening and terraces work, rather than treating the building as a backdrop to a single image.
