DISCOVERY / Letterpress & Shared Making
The type you can rearrange.
A two-day Center for Book Arts workshop turns wood type into prints that participants exchange and remake. The encounter leaves a method, not only a souvenir.

A letter can be read, but it can also be a shape, a texture and a piece of a new composition. Center for Book Arts in New York has scheduled a two-day Letterpress Collage workshop that makes that shift physical. Participants print with wood type, then work with a shared pool of impressions.
Type stops behaving like text
The course page names Roni Gross as instructor and dates the workshop to 12 and 13 December 2026. It describes setting type on press, printing in multiple colours and formats, then using participants’ own and one another’s prints for collage. Class size is limited, and registration has a stated closing date. These practical details matter more than a generic claim that creativity will be transformative.
The photograph is an example of printed and rearranged type published with the course, credited by the school to the instructor. It is not a promise that every participant will make that exact composition. The enduring part may be a new awareness of how ink, pressure, spacing and another person’s work can change the meaning of a familiar character.
Reserve for the work, not the image
Check the current listing, fee, available places and materials before arranging travel. The school asks participants to wear closed-toed shoes and clothes suited to ink work. If New York is not within reach, seek a local community printshop and ask whether it offers a hands-on type workshop. The point is to discover a technique one can continue practicing, not to buy an expensive picture of the experience.
