DISCOVERY / Contemporary Rail Journeys & Interior Design

A moving room for an Italian journey.

La Dolce Vita Orient Express turns rebuilt Italian railway carriages into an encounter with contemporary hospitality and mid-century design. The journey, not just the destination, becomes the occasion.

A hotel room usually stays behind when you go out to see a landscape. On La Dolce Vita Orient Express, the room is part of moving through it. Warm surfaces, geometric furnishings and long windows make the railway carriage an active part of the encounter, rather than a waiting space between destinations.

A contemporary journey, not a borrowed past

The service began its inaugural journey on 4 April 2025. Accor’s launch account identifies rebuilt Italian Z1 carriages, with work undertaken in Brindisi and Palermo, and interiors by Milan-based Dimorestudio. The design looks towards the Italian mid-century rather than pretending the present rooms are untouched cabins from a nineteenth-century train. That distinction makes the project more interesting, not less.

Railway conversion gives existing vehicles another occupation, while the interior authorship proposes a particular pace and atmosphere for travel. The enduring idea is the decision to make transit itself worth attending to. A dining table, a changing view and an overnight interval can form one experience. The value depends on how well the route and onboard rhythm fit the traveller, not on the familiar name alone.

Choose the route as carefully as the room

Start with a specific itinerary on the current operator site, which distinguishes day trips from overnight journeys and offers forward planning into 2027. Confirm the carriage category, stops, included excursions and actual departure. This is a distinct contemporary Italian service, not the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express operated by Belmond. Understanding exactly which journey you are considering is the first step towards deciding whether the experience deserves its place in your life.
